GeoAttendance : The Implementation Of Geolocation In UPSI Staff Attendance System
GeoAttendance is a pioneering digital solution that transforms attendance management through geolocation technology, designed entirely by the UPSI development team. It is the first geolocation-based attendance system used officially for events in Malaysian higher education, offering secure, accurate, and convenient attendance tracking—whether on campus or during remote work (WFH).
Built using Flutter and CodeIgniter, the app integrates fake location prevention, code obfuscation, and GPS validation within a defined radius. It synchronizes seamlessly with the university’s HR attendance system and CPD point tracking, streamlining both compliance and reporting.
Adopted across multiple UPSI departments, GeoAttendance has increased attendance accuracy, cut report processing time from days to minutes, and achieved over 90% user satisfaction. The system promotes sustainability by reducing reliance on physical devices and supports national digitalization through alignment with the MyDIGITAL initiative.
GeoAttendance contributes to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and has achieved Technology Readiness Level 9 (TRL 9)—fully deployed and performing reliably in real-world conditions.
